Waste as Art 2012

Now in its 13th year, Waste as Art (WAA) encourages residents of the Hunter Valley to turn waste into creative, interesting, inspired, and even crazy art pieces.

The competition is open to all Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton and Port Stephens residents.

It's about using our resources wisely, and showing our community that waste is NOT always waste and that it CAN be a useful resource, and also a source of inspiration.

More than 23,000 people came through the Newcastle Museum during the Waste as Art exhibition where the varied array of artworks made from waste items such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans, glass bottles, old magazines and newspapers, styrofoam, plastic bags, used clothing and broken electrical appliances were displayed.

This year, the Newcastle Museum embraced Waste as Art and hosted Monster Madness workshop in the school holidays where kids made 3D monsters out of recycled materials.

Chloe Hunt’s “Trashed” – a portrait of her mother made using junk materials that used to belong to her or were used by her – earned it’s creator $2500 as winner of the Waste as Art 2012 Art Prize.

Prize sponsors for the 2012 competition included:

  • Hunter Resource Recovery
  • Thiess Services
  • Solo - Resource Recovery
  • Source Seperation Systems
  • Dean Osland Photograph
