Sustainability Snapshots

Origins | Snapshots @ Events ‘07 | Snapshots Trial ‘06

Sustainability Snapshots (SS) was a initially a trial program, developed to complement the Sustainability Workshops run by HWEG member organisations across the Hunter Valley, NSW.

The premise was simple: to target visitors to shopping centres and deliver a short, sharp sustainability education message in a fun & appealing way – via performance. The message would be a ‘snapshot’; a fact, figure, hint or tip on sustainable living (such as how to save water, energy, reduce waste at home etc).

Rather than spend time pushing a strong environmental justification for suggested practices, the ‘snapshots’ would highlight economic and practical reasons for sustainable actions. The ‘snapshots’ were designed to have maximum impact in a short period of time and were delivered along the following themes:

SS achieved some success (measured as both qualitative and quantitative findings) – the performance aspect of the program was hugely successful in attracting people’s attention and interaction. Conversely, the value of the supporting display (developed jointly by HWEG) was questioned as it was rarely noticed.

The second program, ‘Sustainability Snapshots @ Events’ (SS@E) focused on delivering similar messages at organised regional events. Given the success of performance as the delivery medium in the SS Trial, performers were also used in SS@E.
